Anorexia Nervosa
- Anorexia Nervosa affects about 1% of the population.
- For females who have anorexia nervosa and who are between the ages of 15-24, the chance of dying is about 12 times higher than the chance of dying from all other causes. Anorexia Nervosa is the 3rd most common chronic illness in girls ages 15-19.
- Anorexia Nervosa is the refusal to maintain body weight at or above minimally normal weight for age and height (less than 85% of what is expected).
- Individuals have an intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat even if they are currently underweight. They try to control body weight through exercise, food intake and other means.
- Individuals have a distorted perception of their body shape
- Females have had no menstrual cycle for three consecutive months.
