Levels Of Care

There are different levels of care for treating eating disorders. (For a definition of these levels of care go to the "Network of Help" link on this website):

  • Outpatient
  • Intensive outpatient program (IOP) or partial hospital program (PHP)
  • Residential treatment
  • Inpatient hospitalization
  • Community resources

The level of care a person needs may be determined by members of the treatment team. Care for eating disorders occurs on a continuum. A person who starts out at one level of care, e.g., outpatient care, may later need another level, e.g., residential care, and may move in and out of different levels of care while on the journey of recovery. Each individual receiving care is unique. No one type or method of care fits all.
