The Western New York Comprehensive Care Center for Eating Disorders (EDRCWNY) wants to ensure that you have the most up-to-date information about eating disorders. While many eating-disorders-related websites exist, we encourage you to begin your web search for education on two of the most well-known and respected websites in the country. These are the Academy for Eating Disorders (www.aedweb.org) and the National Eating Disorders Association websites (nationaleatingdisorders.org).

Academy for Eating Disorders: www.aedweb.org
The Academy for Eating Disorders (AED) is an international transdisciplinary professional organization that promotes excellence in research, treatment and prevention of eating disorders. The AED provides education, training and a forum for collaboration and professional dialogue.

The Academy's objectives are to:

  • Promote the effective treatment and care of patients with eating disorders and associated disorders
  • Develop and advance initiatives for the prevention of eating disorders
  • Disseminate knowledge regarding eating disorders to members of the Academy, other professionals and the general public
  • Stimulate and support research in the field
  • Promote multidisciplinary expertise within the Academy's membership
  • Advocate for the field on behalf of patients, the public and eating disorder professionals
  • Assist in the development of guidelines for training, practice and professional conduct within the field
  • Identify and reward outstanding achievement and service in the field

National Eating Disorders Association: www.nationaleatingdisorders.org
The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) is the largest not-for-profit organization in the United States working to prevent eating disorders and provide treatment referrals to those suffering from anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder and those concerned with body image and weight issues.

NEDA is dedicated to expanding public understanding and prevention of eating disorders and promoting access to quality treatment for those affected along with support for their families through education, advocacy and research.

purpose:

NEDA serves the needs of the national community by providing programs, products and services of superior quality that support the elimination of eating disorders. To achieve our mission, we develop prevention programs for a wide range of audiences, publish and distribute educational materials as well as operate the nation's first toll-free eating disorders information and referral help-line.

This organization seeks to alleviate the problems of eating disorders by educating the public and healthcare professionals, encouraging research, and sharing resources on all aspects of these disorders. ANAD's Web site includes information on finding support groups, referrals and treatment centers, advocacy, and background on eating disorders.

Anna Westin Foundation: www.annawestinfoundation.org
This organization was founded in memory of a child who died from bulimia complications. It performs advocacy, education, speakers, and provides resources about eating disorders, treatment, and navigating the health insurance system. The Anna Westin Foundation and Methodist Hospital Eating Disorders Institute partnered to establish a long-term residential eating disorder treatment program for women in Minnesota.
